Foto Friday: Warrior Dash x2

I actually had a completely different post planned for today, but then I got an email that the professional pictures from Warrior Dash were up.   I was stoked that they were even able to read my bib # for some of these.   I haven’t *quite* finished looking through the “lost and found” pics to see if I can find myself diving into mud.   Rest assured that if I do, part 3 will be on the way!

Charging the Hills

Navigating a mud slide

Jumping over fire!

And again (This is my fave. I might have to purchase)

Apparently my dismount is less-than-graceful!

I am a Warrior!

This past weekend, I participated in the Warrior Dash Midwest, a 5K (ish) trail run with 12 obstacles thrown in for good measure.   I “ran” it with my friend NIkki, but–to be honest– we did a fair share of walking, so I consider it more of a fun run than a race.  Potatoes, pot-ah-toes.

The Warrior Dash is unlike anything I’ve ever experienced… and I had no clue what to expect.  I hadn’t really trained for it and was a little nervous about the obstacles. Our heat started at 10:30 and it was already SUPER hot and sunny.   But, my lord, it was SO MUCH FUN.    We jumped over cars, crawled through tunnels, scaled walls, climbed up cargo nets, jumped over fire, etc.

And then there was the mud!  There were a total of 3 mud obstacles, but–as always– they saved the best for last.  After the fire jump, you have to crawl under barbed wire in a HUGE mud pit.  As soon as I came up to the pit, I hear the crowd chanting “Dive. Dive. Dive.”   So I dove.   I got mud in my eyes… in my ears… in my nose… everywhere.  It was sooo much fun.

The after-party was the best part… lots of nice people gave us their free beer coupons and we had a great time conversing with other Warriors.   The bling was pretty nice, too:  A standard cotton tshirt, a cool medal, and–wait for it– a warrior helmet!!  Can’t get much better than that.

On to the pictures (many of which were “borrowed” from other people’s facebook pages…)

I was most intimidated by the cargo net

The hay bales were much easier than I expected. More like "hay steps"

The fire jump was FUN... much higher than anticipated

The Army crawl throuh mud was definitely the most fun!

Correction: The afterparty was the best part!

Beer!!

Costumes!

Mud!

New friends! (this lady was clean when she started. Then her kids hugged her. We wanted our picture taken with "the mom")

Bling!

There was mud everywhere…

On our shoes

On my legs (note the pieces of hay/straw stuck on them, too!)

On my face

In my ear

on my camera

and my bag

We finally got hosed off by one of these...

but only managed to get *kinda* clean (and a LOT sun burnt for me)

In the end, I finished in about 46 minutes.  I’m not at all concerned about the time, though. It was SO.MUCH.FUN.  We’re already thinking of what we’re going to do next year!

Foto Monday(?): Signs, Signs, Everywhere are Signs

Yeah, Yeah, Yeah.  I suck at blogging.  I have a bunch of Foto Friday posts I want to do, but I can never manage to actually *do* them on Friday.  And I haven’t posted anything at all this month, so here’s a special Monday edition.  Lucky you.

Have I mentioned lately how much I love my friends?  I do.  I love them for a lot of reasons, but I especially love the signs they made me for my big “events” last month.

Kim/Lindsey made the “Go Jill” signs for the half marathon.  The signs are a bunch of inside jokes all rolled into one (and, really, wouldn’t be that funny if I explained them to you. Trust me on this one.)  I honestly didn’t even “get” all of it when I saw Kim at Mile 11, but I L-O-V-E that she was there… with her trademark “cell phone” scream… and a sign!

The big signs were made by Nikki and Carrie for my Derby Debut.  I especially liked the “signs on sticks.”  It was awesome to see my friends holding these during the bout.  Kyle was on the floor with the Bitch E. Rich #815 sign.   Kim (and Donna?) made the smaller signs that say “Kill, Kill, Kill…, Bitch E. Rich likes it rough, and Bitch E. Rich is one bad mother F’er.”  They had a bunch more of the smaller ones, but I think I misplaced them along the way.

My only regret is that I FAILed to get any pictures of my “fans” with the signs.  Next time, fo sho.

Foto Friday: Facebook meme edition

I don’t know about y’all, but I’m getting annoyed by all the facebook memes going around.  I refuse to play out of principle.   However, if I were to play, here’s some of the pictures I’d post:

Throwback  photo
fb instructions:  Change your profile pic to a pic of you back in the day

pampasan chair--check, hammer pants--check, day glo shirt-check= genuinely happy Christmas smile

Sibling  photo
fb instructions: If you love your brothers/sisters, post a photo of you together

Of course I love them! From left: David (half-bro), Jo (sis-in-law), Ryan (bro), me, Kelli (half-sis)

Celebrity photo
fb instructions: Post a photo of the celebrity you’ve been told you look like

I did an entire post on this once. I’m still going with Jewel.  Not so much these days, though.

Couple photo
fb instructions:  In honor of Valentine’s Day, post a pic of you and your significant other and tell how long you’ve been together/how you met

This was taken on NYE. I love it cuz we're REALLY laughing, not doing our usual smile-for-the-camera bit

We’ve been together a little over a year.  Our “story” isn’t really one to pass down to the grandkids, so we’ll just say we met in school and re-connected years later ;)

And, just for fun…
Here are my entries from the Urban Dictionary:

1. Girl’s name
2. A very hot girl who is secretly very dirty but no one would know it.
3. A rampant sex beast – amazing in bed.
4. other meanings: flows like water (turkish)/ melody (old french)/ free man (german/french)/ love (gaelic)/ beloved (latin)

or, alternatively:

A crazy pyscho feminist who rages on most days about nothing in particular, leading you in circles going no where but confusion

The one where she talks about roller derby…

Lesley kinda tipped my hat in the comments.  But for those of you who don’t read that far– I’m going to be a roller derby girl!!

There’s a new roller derby league starting up in C-U.  My friend Laura is on the team and she invited me to practice last weekend.  I couldn’t make it, but I attended a “meet and greet” a few nights ago and I went to my first practice today.

It is sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much fun!!

We did some open skating, some drills and just got a feel for the sport.  This was an “open” practice, so anyone could come and they had 30+ girls there, which was record attendance.  They also have “closed” practices on Wednesday for girls who are committed to derby.

A few things . . .

  • The league is just getting started, so there are no bouts planned just yet.
  • You use quad (4-wheeled) skates, not roller blades
  • No, I haven’t learned to block or “take out” people yet
  • We skate on a flat course, not one of the ramps that you see on TV
  • All the girls aren’t hard-core b!tches
  • Yes, I fell…. once
  • You don’t have to be a GREAT skater to do derby, but there is a proficiency exam for when we start bouts and stuff.
  • I’m a *much* better skater than I thought I was.  I was a little shaky at first, but I was skating with the best of them at the end.

One concern…

I *LOVED* practice today and I’m super pumped to be a part of it. It’s something different, the girls are really cool, and it’s a pretty good workout.  My only concern is trying to fit in bi-weekly practices with my half-marathon training.  It absolutely counts for my cross-training days, but I’m afraid it will affect my long run schedule (currently I prefer to do long runs on Sat and rest on Sun, but now I’ll have to do derby on Sat. and the run on Sun.)

And, a request. . .

All derby girls need a derby name. They don’t have to be family-friendly.   Right now, the top-runner for my derby name is Bitch E. Rich, but I need a second choice… and any other suggestions you might have.  There’s an international registry of derby names and no two girls can have the same name.   So, get your thinking caps on.

WHAT SHOULD MY DERBY NAME BE?

Bullets with Butterfly Wings

Wow… “long time, no blog” seems a bit cliché, but well… I’ve been busy.  I’m not sure what all I’ve been doing, but here are a few highlights.

Over the last few weeks, I

  • had happy hour with my work peeps.  And then celebrated a friend’s 30th birthday… with house guests!
  • became an aunt.  Ryan and Jo don’t want her pictures plastered all over the Internet, but I can say with certainty that she’s absolutely the most perfect baby girl ever.   Yes, I’m biased.
  • had my car in the shop waaaayyy more than I would’ve liked.  I’m not 100% sure it’s fixed yet.
  • celebrated Christmas with my dad’s side of the family, which included meeting my great niece for the first time.
  • made my first successful batch of “murdah bars”– chocolate chip/peanut butter/cookie perfection
  • helped a friend celebrate her 29th birthday (for the 3rd time) with a surprise party
  • celebrated the holidays with my book group
  • attempted to re-create a pear/bacon/goat cheese recipe, without said recipe.  Limited success.
  • attended my official company Christmas party… and unofficial bar crawl
  • ran a few times… but not as much as I should have.  I missed this weekend’s long run.   Next weekend isn’t looking good, either.
  • got hit on at the gym for the first time.  He actually used the “you come here often?” line.
  • took a whirlwind trip to Chicago, which involved me riding in the backseat underneath an area rug
  • made an unsuccessful batch of Ramen noodles.  Yes, I messed up Ramen!

So, now you’re all caught up.  Christmas week is upon us and I still have presents to buy and wrap and a houseful of stuff to put away.  I have a couple year-end posts planned and then I’m going to re-think my blog a bit.

A big THANK YOU and Merry Christmas for those of you who have kept up with me over the last year… It’s always nice to know there’s an audience out there reading my random ramblings.
