In a nutshell…

This is what I’ve been up to:

Running

I had a pretty stellar week of running:  I re-vamped my running schedule to fit with my derby schedule and I actually ENJOYED a treadmill workout for once.    And then I fell off the wagon.  I skipped my FIRST long run this weekend and felt so guilty about it that I took a rest day yesterday. FAIL.   I’m halfway through my schedule so I guess it was bound to happen eventually.  But I’m *not* happy about it.   I gotta get back in the saddle today.

Roller derby

I’m 3 practices in and I L-O-V-E it.   On Sat we got to practice hits, which was super fun.  And we saw a mock “bout,” which was interesting.  We’re going to a REAL bout this weekend and I can’t wait to see it in action.   I still haven’t officially committed to a name yet.   And, no, we don’t have any of our own bouts scheduled. It will be a while, but you can rest assured that I’ll let everyone know!

Rounds4Ryann

We’re currently in the process  of planning the first annual Rounds 4 Ryann golf outing to benefit the Ryann Hope Foundation and CDH research.  (you can read more about Ryann’s story here and my efforts to raise money here, and here).   I got my first hole sponsor today, but we are still looking for people to sponsor holes and/or donate items for the silent auction or goodie bags.  If you or anyone you know is interested, drop me a line at cari [underscore] rich [at] yahoo [dot] com.  Don’t worry– I’ll be bugging you all with info on golfing, volunteering, raffles, etc. in the near future :)

Tons of Fun

The last few weeks  have been jam-packed with fun.  I went to see Keller Williams with my BFF Lesley a few weeks ago.   I played my first REAL game of poker on Superbowl Sunday (and came in 5th… not too shabby for a rookie).  Last weekend I had a much-needed “date night” with my girls.  We went to see Valentine’s Day then had dinner, drinks, and lots of laughs afterwards.  It’s been forever since we’ve all been together and it was waayyy overdue.   Then I had a REAL Valentine’s date followed by a day off of work–what more could a girl ask for??

That’s pretty much it in a nutshell…   You’re now all up to speed on my uber-fascinating existence.

Foto Friday: Photobooth fun!

A few weeks ago (I told you these updates would be non-linear!), I attended my friend Jacqui’s wedding. It was a lot of fun, but I don’t have many pics from that night (other than a HILARIOUS–but unintentional–shot of me doing the “Carich dance.”)

The wedding was super fun… and they had a photobooth!  I’ve seen this on TV before, but never in real life.

Basically, they have a booth set up and you get your picture taken (like you did at the mall when you were in Jr. high).  Except now they give you two printouts of your photos–one for you to keep and one that you paste in a book for the bride and groom.   There’s also a digital record–which Jacqui posted on facebook for the world to see.   SO FUN!!

Kyle and I. That last pic is horrendous...and priceless!

The Right Stuff

You know how the best part of riding a roller coaster is the ability to scream at the top of your lungs for no apparent reason?  That’s exactly how I felt attending the New Kids on the Block concert this weekend.  I’m almost embarrassed to say it, but it was a REALLY good time… and they put on an extremely entertaining show.

Like everything else, it was made even more entertaining by the people we were with.  I’ll post all the photos on my facebook and MySpace pages, but here are a few highlights…

THE CAR RIDE

We decided to don wigs and jam out to NKOTB the whole way there.  The toll booth guys loved us!

THE SHIRTS

We made t-shirts.  On the front it said: “Cover Girl” on the back, each of us had the name of one of the New Kids.  I got Joey, even though Donnie has always been my favorite.

THE SHOW

Like I said, they put on a spectacular show.  It was well worth the $90/ticket we paid.   They played all of their hits and a few of their new songs.  Joey and Jordan sang songs from their solo careers.  Once you got past the fact that 35-to-40 year olds were onstage singing hits from 15 years ago, it was really fun.  The crowd was soooo into it and I just kept thinking about how awesome it must feel for these guys to still play to such an enthusiastic audience.

It was great because even though the New Kids pulled out songs and dance moves from 15 years ago, they had a sense of humor about it.  At one point Joey said: “No need to fight over us anymore, ladies… It’s okay for 2 girls in the same group to like Jordan.”  Which was, of course met with thunderous applause.

POST SHOW

We decided that the reason NKOTB was more fun this time is because a) we can now drink beer and b) we didn’t have our moms with us!  Judging by our post-show antics, maybe we did need some “adult supervision.”  Two noteworthy things happened.

1) We met Beau from Tila Tequila.

Kari recognized him in the hallway before the show.  We weren’t sure if it was him (I didn’t even know who he was), so Kim yelled “Beau” really loud.  He turned around and we all screamed like schoolgirls. Amazingly enough we saw him after the show and were able to snap this photo:

2) We unsuccessfully tried to get backstage.  And on the tour bus.

It was a super-fun trip.  With this group of girls, I’m not surprised we had a good time, but I was surprised at how much I thoroughly enjoyed the show.  I’d do it again in a heartbeat!!

Foto Friday: Finding Focus

I adore alliteration. Can you tell?

This week, I’m taking Scott’s advice and shifting the focus of Foto Friday to just one image.

This photo was taken at Ryan and Jo’s wedding reception over 2 years ago. During the “crazy-drunken-dancing” portion of the evening Kenny decided to lift Jo up and spin her.

I love it because it captures the fun we all had that night. Plus, the action shot of the beer spilling out of her cup and floating to the floor is amazing. I wish I could take credit for this photo, but I’m not sure who took it.

Ryan and Jo’s reception was truly one of the best nights I’ve ever had. There was impromptu karaoke, speeches, dancing, goose-chasing, late-night swimming in the hotel pool, and a wonderful group of friends and family to help us celebrate. I thought going to Jamaica for the wedding was a good time. This was even funner.

And, yes, I said funner.

Foto Friday: Nawlins Style

Call it a cop-out, but this week’s Foto Friday will also serve as my New Orleans post.  As you probably know by now, I went to The Big Easy last week for Kristi’s wedding.  She’s my cousin, but she’s also one of my best friends, so it was nice to have friends and family in one place.

As with any good memory-making experience, the “good parts” can’t be conveyed in a simple run-down of where we went, what we saw and what we ate (and drank), so I’ll let the pictures speak for themselves.

There are tons more memories I’ve not included here, but here are some of my favorites (in no particular order)

"Killing It" with the best friends a girl could ask for

Freewriting from Atlanta

I shoulda gone to the gym this morning.  Instead I chose to sleep.  Last night was super duper fun.  That’s right–super duper!   We ate.  We drank.  We played cards.  I won.

The restaurant we went to last night was called Eclipse di Luna.  Great for tapas.

I feel like these freewrites are a broken record, but as I was lying in bed this morning, I was thinking of all the things I could do to spice up my life.  Go back to school.  Become an academic.  Join the Peace Corps.  Get serious about writing (and not just blogging about writing–that’s lame).   I have these ideas/thoughts in the morning and then I get on with my day and give them up.

I need a plan.  A deadline.  I need to say that by X date I’m going to research all my options and make a decision.

On another (broken record) note… I once again realized how much cooler other people are than I am.  I wish I had known about the world of academia earlier ‘cuz I think I totally would have been good at it.  And maybe I still can.  I just don’t know what I’d want to study.

I chose my undergrad major while flipping through a college catalog in the bathroom.  Sexy, huh?  Maybe I should just get a dartboard or something and choose my PhD program that way.

I need to conquer my fears.  When people are afraid of heights they make them go skydiving or something.  My fear is failure.  In order to conquer the fear, do I need to fail first?   Hmmm….  or as L would say  “Hrmph…”
