The first-ever bout of the Twin City Derby Girls was last Friday. I was lucky enough to be part of this history-making event as a skater for the ‘Paign. Our team lost to the formidable Boneyard Bombshells, but it was a hella good time. Seriously. Most. Fun. Ever. I had a *lot* of crowd support– tons of friends and family were there to cheer me on and it was amazing.
For a quick introduction to derby (and some shots of me on TV!), check out this piece from the local news. It was amazing to see it post-bout. The whole bar was cheering! Words don’t do it justice, so let’s have some pictures, shall we?
A view from above. See that pink track? I helped lay it... along with two real-life rocket scientists (that's me in the pink helmet)!
We started the night with a slow motion jam to help explain the rules of the game to our legions of fans
My team, the 'Paign during introductions. It's possible I tripped a bit when my name got called...
Best.Fans.Ever. (separate post to come on the awesomeness of my fans)
Bitch E Rich in action
Lining up at the pivot line (the stripe on my helmet means I'm playing pivot, which means I line up at the front of the pack for the beginning of the jam.)
of course, I don't always stay in the front. Here I am yelling at another blocker that the jammer is coming through
getting ready to block (note how sideways my helmet panty is in this one... awesome!)
Blocking. Technically, she's blocking me, but this is the best "real" action shot of me
and of course there was an after-party!!
All photos (except the last two) by Alex Wild. He’s a wonderfully talented wildlife photographer who just happens to be married to one of our derby girls. He is just getting into sports photography and it’s a real treat to have him with us. You can see the rest of the pictures from the bout on his web site.
More derby awesomeness to come, I’m sure.
This week I went to get my “official” roller derby pix taken. Since I still haven’t 100% chosen a name, I wasn’t quite sure what to do, so I pulled out the costume tub and put together the most derby-rific outfit I could find.
Here are some of the better shots:

This one's my favorite
boots AND skates?? hmmm...
Clearly, I need to work on my mean face if I’m going for the Bitch E. Rich persona :)
This is what I’ve been up to:
I had a pretty stellar week of running: I re-vamped my running schedule to fit with my derby schedule and I actually ENJOYED a treadmill workout for once. And then I fell off the wagon. I skipped my FIRST long run this weekend and felt so guilty about it that I took a rest day yesterday. FAIL. I’m halfway through my schedule so I guess it was bound to happen eventually. But I’m *not* happy about it. I gotta get back in the saddle today.
I’m 3 practices in and I L-O-V-E it. On Sat we got to practice hits, which was super fun. And we saw a mock “bout,” which was interesting. We’re going to a REAL bout this weekend and I can’t wait to see it in action. I still haven’t officially committed to a name yet. And, no, we don’t have any of our own bouts scheduled. It will be a while, but you can rest assured that I’ll let everyone know!
We’re currently in the process of planning the first annual Rounds 4 Ryann golf outing to benefit the Ryann Hope Foundation and CDH research. (you can read more about Ryann’s story here and my efforts to raise money here, and here). I got my first hole sponsor today, but we are still looking for people to sponsor holes and/or donate items for the silent auction or goodie bags. If you or anyone you know is interested, drop me a line at cari [underscore] rich [at] yahoo [dot] com. Don’t worry– I’ll be bugging you all with info on golfing, volunteering, raffles, etc. in the near future :)
Tons of Fun
The last few weeks have been jam-packed with fun. I went to see Keller Williams with my BFF Lesley a few weeks ago. I played my first REAL game of poker on Superbowl Sunday (and came in 5th… not too shabby for a rookie). Last weekend I had a much-needed “date night” with my girls. We went to see Valentine’s Day then had dinner, drinks, and lots of laughs afterwards. It’s been forever since we’ve all been together and it was waayyy overdue. Then I had a REAL Valentine’s date followed by a day off of work–what more could a girl ask for??
That’s pretty much it in a nutshell… You’re now all up to speed on my uber-fascinating existence.
Lesley kinda tipped my hat in the comments. But for those of you who don’t read that far– I’m going to be a roller derby girl!!
There’s a new roller derby league starting up in C-U. My friend Laura is on the team and she invited me to practice last weekend. I couldn’t make it, but I attended a “meet and greet” a few nights ago and I went to my first practice today.
It is sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much fun!!
We did some open skating, some drills and just got a feel for the sport. This was an “open” practice, so anyone could come and they had 30+ girls there, which was record attendance. They also have “closed” practices on Wednesday for girls who are committed to derby.
A few things . . .
- The league is just getting started, so there are no bouts planned just yet.
- You use quad (4-wheeled) skates, not roller blades
- No, I haven’t learned to block or “take out” people yet
- We skate on a flat course, not one of the ramps that you see on TV
- All the girls aren’t hard-core b!tches
- Yes, I fell…. once
- You don’t have to be a GREAT skater to do derby, but there is a proficiency exam for when we start bouts and stuff.
- I’m a *much* better skater than I thought I was. I was a little shaky at first, but I was skating with the best of them at the end.
I *LOVED* practice today and I’m super pumped to be a part of it. It’s something different, the girls are really cool, and it’s a pretty good workout. My only concern is trying to fit in bi-weekly practices with my half-marathon training. It absolutely counts for my cross-training days, but I’m afraid it will affect my long run schedule (currently I prefer to do long runs on Sat and rest on Sun, but now I’ll have to do derby on Sat. and the run on Sun.)
And, a request. . .
All derby girls need a derby name. They don’t have to be family-friendly. Right now, the top-runner for my derby name is Bitch E. Rich, but I need a second choice… and any other suggestions you might have. There’s an international registry of derby names and no two girls can have the same name. So, get your thinking caps on.
WHAT SHOULD MY DERBY NAME BE?
